PhD Call for Applications SummaryAcademic Year 2025/2026 – 41st CycleDeadline: 6 June 2025Research Field: Professions and applied sciencesRead more at https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/funding/phd-2025/26-data-scienceApplicationThe Call for Applications for the 2025/2026 PhD Programs is officially open. Applicants, regardless of their nationality, age and gender are invited to submit their applications. Applicants can find all essential information in the relevant paragraphs of this guide.Further information along with possible modifications to, requirements, submission procedures, available positions and/or scholarships, will be given, before the deadline, through the pages:• https://dottorati.uniroma2.it/corsi-di-dottorato_p10297.aspx• https://dottorati.uniroma2.it/corsi-di-dottorato_p10299.aspx AboutOutlineThe availability of huge volumes of data, basically characterized by the increasingly extensive and pervasive use of digital technologies, leads the ongoing revolution in many areas of social, economic and industrial reality, posing new challenges to the scientific and technological research in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and in several other disciplines, from Physics to Economics, from Medicine to Human Sciences. In this context, the accessibility and processing of large amounts of data, both in centralized and distributed systems, their usage in the design and implementation of complex decision-making models, favors the study and development of autonomous systems in different fields (from mission-critical applications to the studies of natural and social phenomena, the prediction of economical dynamics as well as the diagnostics and planning in medicine or in industrial robotics). The PhD in Data Science is aimed, in its markedly interdisciplinary nature, to train, at the highest level, experts able to conduct research to understand and master the mathematical, statistical and computer science methodologies of data analysis and processing as well as the underlying technologies supporting applications in a wide variety of of scientific, industrial, economic, medical and social contexts. The reasons for a new PhD program in Data Science are many and significant. First of all, the offer in Central Italy of a doctoral training on these topics is still quite limited, but at the same time it is confronted with an increasing demand for experts in Data Science. This training should be understood with a characterization focused on mathematical-computer science skills, then a strong scientific-technological vocation, properly integrated on established statistical, economic, social and linguistic principles, thus able to give answers to the dynamics of this area of expertise that is very accelerated and strongly interdisciplinary and culturally heterogeneous. The School of Doctorate represents the indispensable ground for a wide range of students of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Economics, Physics, Mathematics and not only, at our University of Tor Vergata. Today such students apply and succeed (according to various data sources) at other Schools. These students are attracted by initiatives in Data Science because in them is clear and dominant the role played by the computational knowledge, the strong scientific character of the educational objectives and the diversified potential applications: from Physics to Economics up to Social Sciences. It is interesting to note that many of the courses mentioned here, for example, the Master Degree Courses in Computer Science at the Department of Business Engineering, which have a large number of students, unlike other courses are not decreasing in number of enrolled students. This phenomenon is both cause and effect of the centrality that the themes of culture and digital transformation play in the industrial and social spheres of our country.See PHD IN DATA SCIENCE | TOR VERGATA

Study measures the psychological toll of wildfires

Jan 13, 2025 at 10:18 PM

Research in Southeast Asia quantifies how much wildfire smoke hurts peoples’ moods; finds the effect is greater when fires originate in other countries.Peter Dizikes | MIT NewsPublication Date: February 13, 2024Wildfires in Southeast Asia significantly affect peoples’ moods, especially if the fires originate outside a person’s own country, according to a new study. The study, which measures sentiment by analyzing large amounts of social media data, helps show the psychological toll of wildfires that result in substantial air pollution, at a time when such fires are becoming a high-profile marker of climate change. “It has a substantial negative impact on people’s subjective well-being,” says Siqi Zheng, an MIT professor and co-author of a new paper detailing the results. “This is a big effect.”The magnitude of the effect is about the same as another shift uncovered through large-scale studies of sentiment expressed online: When the weekend ends and the work week starts, people’s online postings reflect a sharp drop in mood. The new study finds that daily exposure to typical wildfire smoke levels in the region produces an equivalently large change in sentiment.“People feel anxious or sad when they have to go to work on Monday, and what we find with the fires is that this is, in fact, comparable to a Sunday-to-Monday sentiment drop,” says co-author Rui Du, a former MIT postdoct who is now an economist at Oklahoma State University.Read more at https://news.mit.edu/2024/study-measures-psychological-toll-wildfires-0213

Forest fire in Thailand: Spatio-temporal distribution and future risk assessment

Jan 13, 2025 at 10:10 PM

Natural Hazards ResearchVolume 4, Issue 1, March 2024, Pages 87-96AbstractUnderstanding the spatiotemporal distribution of forest fires and future predictions is very important for management strategies. To identify the present status of forest fires in the Kingdom of Thailand and their risk in the future, ten-year forest fire data were used, and a forest fire hotspot was prepared. A geospatial technique was used in the study to characterize the parameters of forest fires in the country and identify future forest fire risk areas. Most of the forest fires in the country were found to be seasonal. Deciduous forests in higher elevations and on moderate slopes were most vulnerable to forest fire. The level of aridity, soil moisture, temperature, precipitation, vegetation status, and topography influenced the spatiotemporal distribution of forest fires in the country. Greater than 50% of fire risks were observed in 22 administrative divisions, and 17 of the 209 protected areas are also in the high-risk category. The final forest fire hotspot map can be used in policy development and successful management strategies. A better monitoring strategy should be used in the fire hotspot areas as a precautionary measure to minimize the anthropogenic causes of forest fires.Read more at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666592123000847

Sustainable development requires consistent access to clean, affordable energy to support economic activity, improve national development, and improve human wellbeing. In addition, there is a strong link between the energy sector and global climate change due to the impact of CO2 arising from burning the fossil fuels. Study shows that carbon emissions hit the peak in 2018, mainly from the carbon-rich fossil fuels that generated nearly 85% of the world’s energy. Taking the above-mentioned as a backdrop, energy is certainly a complex technology involving multidisciplinary research, development, demonstration and deployment in energy systems, grid systems and applications, especially in the energy transition era.In anticipation, the combination of rising populations and living standards of human society in the next 50 years will demand for the development of massively scaled sustainable energy and low-carbon electricity generation solutions with an objective of battling the climate change. These challenges, albeit an unparalleled threat to the business-as-usual, also represent a remarkable opportunity for research, innovation, and green growth. With the success of the previous 8 year, ICGEA came to its 9th edition in 2025. It is proud to announce that 2025 The 9th International Conference on Green Energy and Applications will be held during March 7-9, 2025 in Singapore, which is sponsored by Singapore Institute of Electronics. The theme of ICGEA 2025 is to bridge and connect presenters and audience with different disciplines and background as well as from different geographical locations. The most interesting and disruptive technology often happened at edges and boundaries of different disciplines, and so the aim of the conference is to bring these brains together to synthesize the ideas and knowledge from different sources to achieve the energy innovation.ICGEA 2025 scope covers, but not limited to, the following topics:• Advance biofuel for a sustainable heavy-duty transport and aviation• Bioenergy supply management strategies• Biofuels in developing economies• Biomass• Carbon and Methane capture, storage and utilization• Electric Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution• Energy and Health• Energy and Water• Energy efficiency in building designs and management• Energy in food production and processing• Energy storage and cyber security for smart grids• FACTS and HVDC controllers• Geothermal energy• Green Buildings and Infrastructures• Green energy and energy access• Green energy and social benefits• Green Energy Education and Training• Green Energy in Transport• Green Industrial Technology• Green Policies and Programmes• Green Power• Greening the Fossil Fuels• Greening Urbanization and Urban Settlements• Hybrid vehicles and its integration• Hydropower• Income generation with green energy• Increasing energy access with clean resources• Integration of renewable energy sources in buildings• Low carbon city scenarios, plans and actions• Mainstreaming low-carbon innovations• MDGs and Green Energy• Microgrid and active distribution network management• National bioenergy programmes: economic, political and social issues• Natural gas research and development• Power system economics, operation and control• Protection, reliability, and restructuring of power systems• Rapid urbanization and energy-environmental implications• Regulatory policies and program for implementation and control• Renewable Energy for Power and Heat• Role and future of electric vehicles in smart grids• Rural Development through Green Energy• Settlement forms and functions and energy• Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Integration• Solar thermal and photovoltaics• Sustainable coal use and clean coal technologies• Sustainable materials for buildings• Transformation of power grids to smart grids• Wind energy
