Study measures the psychological toll of wildfires

Jan 13, 2025 at 10:18 PM

Research in Southeast Asia quantifies how much wildfire smoke hurts peoples’ moods; finds the effect is greater when fires originate in other countries.Peter Dizikes | MIT NewsPublication Date: February 13, 2024Wildfires in Southeast Asia significantly affect peoples’ moods, especially if the fires originate outside a person’s own country, according to a new study. The study, which measures sentiment by analyzing large amounts of social media data, helps show the psychological toll of wildfires that result in substantial air pollution, at a time when such fires are becoming a high-profile marker of climate change. “It has a substantial negative impact on people’s subjective well-being,” says Siqi Zheng, an MIT professor and co-author of a new paper detailing the results. “This is a big effect.”The magnitude of the effect is about the same as another shift uncovered through large-scale studies of sentiment expressed online: When the weekend ends and the work week starts, people’s online postings reflect a sharp drop in mood. The new study finds that daily exposure to typical wildfire smoke levels in the region produces an equivalently large change in sentiment.“People feel anxious or sad when they have to go to work on Monday, and what we find with the fires is that this is, in fact, comparable to a Sunday-to-Monday sentiment drop,” says co-author Rui Du, a former MIT postdoct who is now an economist at Oklahoma State University.Read more at https://news.mit.edu/2024/study-measures-psychological-toll-wildfires-0213

Forest fire in Thailand: Spatio-temporal distribution and future risk assessment

Jan 13, 2025 at 10:10 PM

Natural Hazards ResearchVolume 4, Issue 1, March 2024, Pages 87-96AbstractUnderstanding the spatiotemporal distribution of forest fires and future predictions is very important for management strategies. To identify the present status of forest fires in the Kingdom of Thailand and their risk in the future, ten-year forest fire data were used, and a forest fire hotspot was prepared. A geospatial technique was used in the study to characterize the parameters of forest fires in the country and identify future forest fire risk areas. Most of the forest fires in the country were found to be seasonal. Deciduous forests in higher elevations and on moderate slopes were most vulnerable to forest fire. The level of aridity, soil moisture, temperature, precipitation, vegetation status, and topography influenced the spatiotemporal distribution of forest fires in the country. Greater than 50% of fire risks were observed in 22 administrative divisions, and 17 of the 209 protected areas are also in the high-risk category. The final forest fire hotspot map can be used in policy development and successful management strategies. A better monitoring strategy should be used in the fire hotspot areas as a precautionary measure to minimize the anthropogenic causes of forest fires.Read more at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666592123000847

World Ranking of Top 2% Scientists (2024)

Dec 24, 2024 at 1:12 AM

August 2024 data-update for "Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators"Published: 16 September 2024|Version 7 |DOI: 10.17632/btchxktzyw.7Contributor: John P.A. IoannidisLink: https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/7Citation metrics are widely used and misused. We have created a publicly available database of top-cited scientists that provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). Separate data are shown for career-long and, separately, for single recent year impact. Metrics with and without self-citations and ratio of citations to citing papers are given and data on retracted papers (based on Retraction Watch database) as well as citations to/from retracted papers have been added in the most recent iteration. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification. Field- and subfield-specific percentiles are also provided for all scientists with at least 5 papers. Career-long data are updated to end-of-2023 and single recent year data pertain to citations received during calendar year 2023. The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field. This version (7) is based on the August 1, 2024 snapshot from Scopus, updated to end of citation year 2023. This work uses Scopus data. Calculations were performed using all Scopus author profiles as of August 1, 2024. If an author is not on the list it is simply because the composite indicator value was not high enough to appear on the list. It does not mean that the author does not do good work. PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT THE DATABASE HAS BEEN PUBLISHED IN AN ARCHIVAL FORM AND WILL NOT BE CHANGED. The published version reflects Scopus author profiles at the time of calculation. We thus advise authors to ensure that their Scopus profiles are accurate. REQUESTS FOR CORRECIONS OF THE SCOPUS DATA (INCLUDING CORRECTIONS IN AFFILIATIONS) SHOULD NOT BE SENT TO US. They should be sent directly to Scopus, preferably by use of the Scopus to ORCID feedback wizard (https://orcid.scopusfeedback.com/) so that the correct data can be used in any future annual updates of the citation indicator databases. The c-score focuses on impact (citations) rather than productivity (number of publications) and it also incorporates information on co-authorship and author positions (single, first, last author). If you have additional questions, see attached file on FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS. Finally, we alert users that all citation metrics have limitations and their use should be tempered and judicious. PhD position in Theoretical Quantum Many-Body Physics

Sep 9, 2024 at 8:06 PM

Application Deadline: 1 Nov 2024 - 20:00 (Europe/Paris)Organisation/Company: Université de StrasbourgDepartment: Centre Européen de Sciences Quantiques - Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS)Research Field: Physics » Quantum mechanicsResearcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1)Positions: PhD PositionsOffer DescriptionThe development of new quantum technologies heavily relies on benchmarks against numerical simulations. However, accurately simulating quantum systems made of many constituents is exponentially complex, especially for the dynamical processes essential to many computations in fundamental physics, in quantum chemistry or in material science. Existing methods typically face the “exponential wall of complexity” which drastically limits our ability to describe complex quantum states of matter. There is an urgent need for methods that provide precise, reliable predictions for large quantum systems and pave the way for future breakthroughs. To tackle this very ambitious problem, we propose to restrict to a specific family of quantum many-body systems that undergo ‘nearly integrable’ dynamics, meaning that their dynamics on experimental time scales is non-chaotic and is governed by a proximate integrable model. Recent theory progress suggests that this family of systems is particularly promising for the development of new computational methods. This problem will be attacked through the prism of concrete toy models in one spatial dimension (spin chains), where the goal is to (i) identify quantifiers based on entanglement and quantum information concepts that are sensitive to the type of dynamics (integrable vs. chaotic) and allow to distinguish between them and (ii) develop new geometries of Tensor Network variational wavefunctions that can accurately approximate the time evolution of the many-body wavefunction and circumvent the exponential wall of complexity. The PhD position is for 3 years, and the PhD candidate will be supervised by Jerome Dubail at the Centre Europeen de Sciences Quantiques in Strasbourg, France.Where to apply: E-mail: j.dubail@unistra.frRequirementsResearch Field: Physics » Quantum mechanicsEducation Level: Master Degree or equivalentLink: https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/271235Website: https://www.cesq.eu/

Accelerating uptake through open proposals for advanced SME innovation

Jul 3, 2024 at 3:36 PM

Accelerating uptake through open proposals for advanced SME innovation (HORIZON-CL3-2024-SSRI-01-02)Programme: Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON)Opening date: 27 June 2024Deadline date: 20 November 2024 17:00:00 Brussels timeTopic descriptionExpectedOutcome:Projects’ results are expected to contribute to some or all of the following outcomes:Development of a mature technological solution addressing EU security policy priorities in the areas addressed by the Cluster 3 work programme;Facilitated access to civil security market for small innovators;Improved cooperation between public buyers and small supply market actors for a swifter uptake of innovation in response to short to mid-term needs;Stronger partnerships between small and medium EU security industry and technology actors to ensure the sustainability of the EU innovation capacity in the civil security domain and reduce technological dependencies from non-EU suppliers in critical security areas.Scope:Europe’s 25 million small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the EU economy. SMEs can bring innovation to societal challenges, including the security of EU citizens. Innovative SMEs and high-tech start-ups can transform and modernise EU security capabilities. However, despite the innovation capacity of EU SMEs, these often experience difficulties in finding their way to the public markets. These include red tape in public contracts, access to new customers, access to finance, industrial competition and IP valorisation. These difficulties are exacerbated in markets that show restrictions of different kind, as it is the case of security.Knowing that SMEs require additional support to reach the security buyers and that the collaboration opportunities offered by the projects of the Pillar II of Horizon Europe can be a catalyst for uptake, this topic aims to offer a collaborative environment for small and medium innovators to tailor their innovations to the specific needs of civil security end-users.Applicants are invited to submit proposals for technology development along with the following principles:Focus on mature technological solutions addressing EU security policy priorities in the areas addressed by the Cluster 3 work programme. Not overlapping with the scope of the topics included in the other destinations of this work programme.Fostering collaboration between SMEs from different Member States and Associated Countries.Involving security end-users in the role of validator and potential first-adopter of the proposed innovations.Fostering collaboration schemes between small companies and research and technology organisations and/or big industrial players aimed at fostering innovative technology transfer or creating innovative business models that facilitate access to market and strengthen the innovation capacity of EU SMEs and start-ups in the domain of civil security.Examples of activities to plan in the proposed projects include, but are not limited to: assimilating market requirements; facilitating access to additional funding; approaching potential public buyers; assess competitive landscape; supporting in innovation management (methodological and process innovation, business model innovation, market innovation); assist in IP management and exploitation; provide guidance for expansion to future markets, etc.The participation of research and technology organisations should not focus on own technology development but on supporting the small industrial players in accelerating the technology transfer of innovative security solutions for their further development and production. It is encouraged that one SME takes the coordinator role[1]. Exceptions to this requirement should be duly justified. The projects should have a maximum estimated duration of 2 years.Under this topic, projects should address the one of the following areas of Fighting Crime and Terrorism (FCT, Option A), Disaster-Resilient Society (DRS, Option B), Resilient Infrastructure (INFRA, Option C) Border Management (BM, Option D). Some examples of domains that could be addressed:.Option A: Some examples of domains that could be addressed under the FCT area are: (indicative and non-exhaustive): mobile forensics; deepfake detection; detection of counterfeiting (fake items, fake currency bills) or of falsified/forged documents (passports, ID cards); detection and countering of advanced forms of malware, as well as non-cash payment frauds and other cyber-scams.Option B: Some examples of domains that could be addressed under the DRS area are (indicative and non-exhaustive): data and satellite/remote sensing information exploitation, positioning and localisation tracking and tracing, monitoring and surveillance for disaster prevention.Option C: some examples of domains that could be addressed under the INFRA area are: (indicative and non-exhaustive): physical access control, autonomous systems used for infrastructure protection, positioning and localisation tracking and tracing, monitoring and surveillance of environments and activities.Option D: under the BM area are (indicative and non-exhaustive): facilitated border checks; secure documents and identity management for border crossings; border surveillance; detection of drugs, explosives, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN), weapons and/or other dangerous materials in customs environment; detection of stolen, smuggled, illicit or illegal goods (cigarettes, art, cultural goods, wildlife) in a customs environmentIn this topic, projects should address the EU security policy priorities in the areas addressed by the Cluster 3 work programme. In this topic, the integration of the gender dimension (sex and gender analysis) in research and innovation content should be addressed only if relevant in relation to the objectives of the research effort.Specific Topic Conditions:Activities are expected to achieve TRL 6-7 by the end of the project – see General Annex B.[1]If a MIDCAP is included in the proposal, it could also take the role of coordinator.Eligible countries: described in Annex B of the Work Programme General AnnexesA number of non-EU/non-Associated Countries that are not automatically eligible for funding have made specific provisions for making funding available for their participants in Horizon Europe projects. See the information in the Horizon Europe Programme Guide.Other eligibility conditions: described in Annex B of the Work Programme General AnnexesThe following additional eligibility conditions apply:Consortia must include, as beneficiaries:- A minimum of three (3) to a maximum of seven (7) partners.- At least 2 SMEs from 2 different Member States.- At least 1 end-user organisation in the areas addressed by the proposal, namely one of the following options:Option A "Fighting Organised Crime and Terrorism’’Option B ‘"Disaster-Resilient Society’’Option C "Resilient Infrastructure’’ andOption D ‘"Border Management’’, provided that the applications attain all thresholds.- At least 2 Member States must be represented in the consortium.Participation of non-SME industries and Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) is not excluded, but it must be limited to 15% of the budget. At least 50% of the budget must be allocated to SMEs.The following exceptions apply: subject to restrictions for the protection of European communication networks.

Funded Regular and Junior Fellowships at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg in Germany

May 20, 2024 at 5:16 PM

Deadline: 15 July 2024AboutOutlineThe Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK) in Delmenhorst is an Institute for Advanced Study in the Northwest of Germany. Its Fellowship program offers outstanding researchers the opportunity to focus on research without the distraction of everyday routines in academia, to interact with colleagues from other disciplines, and to benefit from a diverse and vibrant Fellowship community. The HWK awards Fellowships to highly qualified researchers of all career levels from postdoctoral to senior researchers. With these Fellowships, the HWK supports interdisciplinary and international collaboration both, between its Fellows and research institutions in Germany’s Northwest region, and within the community of Fellows residing on the HWK campus. What is fundedThe HWK awards Fellowships to highly qualified researchers of all career levels from postdoctoral to senior researchers. Regular Fellowships are available for researchers whose PhD (or comparable degree) has been awarded more than five years ago and who have already gained substantial professional experience in academia and research.Junior Fellowships are available for early career researchers whose PhD has been awarded less than five years ago and who have gained first professional experience in academia and research. Both, a continuation of previous research activities, or starting a new strand of research by using the expertise in the Northwestern region, are welcome, this includes crossing disciplinary boundaries.DurationFellowship duration ranges from 3 to 10 months. Residence at the HWK is obligatory. Financial conditions are to be negotiated on an individual basis after successful application. Depending on the Fellowship project, Regular Fellowships and Junior Fellowships can be awarded for a minimum of three and a maximum of ten months. Regular Fellowships may be split into no more than two periods of residence, provided that accommodation is available at the HWK. Junior Fellowships cannot be split. EligibilityExcellent researchers with a PhD from all disciplines and from all parts of the world (except northwestern Germany) are welcome to apply. We also accept applications involving experimental and lab research; in these cases confirmation of access to research infrastructure at a nearby institution is required.Fellows are selected based on the following criteria:the candidate’s academic qualification, the quality and the innovative character of the candidate’s proposed research project, the candidate’s willingness to contribute to and to profit from a highly interdisciplinary Fellowship community, the fit of the proposed project with the spectrum of disciplines and research interests at the HWK.Collaborations with colleagues at the regional universities and research institutes are appreciated but in general, they are not a necessary condition for a Fellowship. They are necessary, however, when the applicant plans to conduct an experimental project and thus needs a research infrastructure for their project. In that case, a regional collaboration partner will have to confirm that they will provide the necessary infrastructure to work on the Fellowship project.Researchers based at institutions in the Northwestern region of Germany cannot apply for Regular or Junior Fellowships. They are encouraged, however, to motivate national or international colleagues to apply for Fellowships.More Information: https://hanse-ias.de/en/fellowships/application?mtm_campaign=Annual%20Call%2020…
